![]() ![]() ![]() Rarely, you can shoot windows and sand will pour out and kill one enemy, and usually this is scripted and required by the story to continue to the next cover based shooter section. You go behind cover, wait 3 minutes for the enemy to stop shooting, peek out your head to shoot off two shots before you’re hurt, rinse and repeat. If it was possible to make a more run of the mill, terrible, snore inducing third person shooter clone, we would also probably be in an alternate timeline where it’s also plausible for the earth to enter event horizon with a black hole in the next few years. The gameplay of Spec Ops: The Line is absolutely downright atrocious. The voice acting is alright when the characters aren’t spewing absolute trite out of their mouths and in a weird sort of way the characters develop how you’d expect them to in this situation- with the exception of the main character, walker, but we’ll get to that later. The graphics are amazingly beautiful at times, and the musical choices are for the most part well done. Objectively speaking, Spec Ops: The Line is not all completely terrible. The game’s subject matter seems genuine from it’s creators, it’s just too bad that they treat you like a child with the message and made the experience incredibly boring and generic in an attempt to force metacommentary to the detriment of the game. Are you OK with media sacrificing anything that makes it good or enjoyable to bring you a point? Are you OK with something deliberately tricking you into a miserably unfun experience just so it can beat you over the head with it’s message? If you agree to either of these things, I do think you will legitimately enjoy Spec Ops: The Line, as this game is a tragedy disguising itself as high art by slapping on a lob shot message about how war is bad, patriotism is bad, and if you have PTSD you immediately hallucinate everything and go on a killing rampage to prove to yourself that you’re not evil.ĭoes that mean that the game is pretentious? No, not by any means. I present the above argument because I feel like this is the basis of whether or not you will like Spec Ops: The Line. This however, is because the game is absolutely fucking atrocious. I can say that this game positively changed my life, gave me a new outlook on game design and artistic expression, and overall made me a better designer in my own stories and worlds. Spec Ops: The Line is a very important game for me. SPEC OPS THE LINE BURNING MOVIEIf you went and saw a movie that was advertised as a blockbuster action flick and it was just an ass farting in your face for 2 hours, would you call it art? ![]()
